Some of the best fishing in no cal is on the American riverthat runs from Tahoe to downtown Sac. There is always something runnig up the river. Right now is the tail end of Shad, Some Strippers are starting to show, you can catch Salmon right now ( but only till end of june salmon season closes july 1 ) after salmon come steelhead up to 20lbs and this will take you up to the end of feb early march if lucky, where it starts all over again with the Shad run
Not sure what species your lookin’ at but, if it be in Northern CA., I fish both the Trinity & Sacto rivers out of Redding for Salmon & Steelhead (in fact headin’ up there in a few months) and let me tell ya’ their both great bodies of water for fishin’. Unfortunately CA., OR. and WA., are experiencin’ big problems with Salmon runs and the Sacto will be closed for where we fish them… So basically, looks like we’ll be concentratin’ on the Trinity this year. As for good fishin’ rivers the Trinity be tops on our list ;)! It supports not only Steelies and Kings but, Smallmouth Bass along with Brown and Rainbow trout as well. All time personal best for myself in the state be the Mattole River outta’ Petrolia (south of Eureka). There’s also the Klamath, Mad and Van Duzen rivers that are great producers. Haven’t fished the Sacto where you might be but, use ta’ do the American. It’s been awhile though mainly because it just got to over populated/fished through the years… Hope I’ve helped but, if I didn’t ~ sure as H _ _ l know for a fact that I got ya’ readin’ what with all the ramblin’ I did !!! “Tight lines” to ya’ and “Fish On” ;)… < ' ( (( > <
Update: HH checked out your source/site and left a “Guest” comment ;)…
My home river is the American, so I would like to say that it is the best - but it’s not. It’s got variety, but it’s not always easy to fish. As for the American though, well….FISHCATCHNFOOL’s answer “almost” got it right. Shad show up in May, usually by the middle to the end of May shad are caught at the mouth of the river. Striper follow. They’re in there now, and starting to head back down. They were actually in the river early this year, and have migrated and held higher up in the system than usual. Shad and striper lasts until about mid July-ish, then there are always resident American River striper populations (declined slightly over the last 4 years). King salmon show up in two distinct seasons - Summer and Fall. The runs last from June-August (summer fish), and August-January (fall fish). Steelhead in the American follow the salmon up in three distinct waves. Fall run, come with the fall salmon. Winter run - come up late november through mid February, and summer run - which come up from march-june. The Winter run is by far the largest sized fish. Yes they can get to 20lbs, but that’s pushing it A LOT!! I’ve only seen a handful of 20lber’s caught in my lifetime. The average size for winter run steelies is about 7-9 lbs. The fall run is more the 4-7 lb average, and the summer fish are even smaller at about 2-5lbs. (YES - there are always exceptions, and “holdovers” but they’re not the norm.)
ANYWAY - The Trinity, Klammath, and the Feather are my top nor Cal. rivers. I love the Trinity. If I told you about it, I’d just be reitterating what FishSteelhead said!! Visit it; get a guide if you have to. It’s a beautiful, fufilling river. And it’s nowhere NEAR as crowded and over fished as the American is.
