I’m going to my first canyon tuna fishing trip (for Yellowfin, Longfin, Bigeye Tuna, Swordfish, and Mahi) in NJ. I prefer to buy my own gear however found some sets to be in the $1000 range. The Skipper says 80 lb class tackle is needed. So I went on eBay and found this rod (http://cgi.ebay.com/Har-Lee-Stand-Up-Big-Game-Tuna-Fishing-Rod-50-100lb-New_W0QQitemZ350098825231QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item350098825231&_trkparms=72%3A1163%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) and this reel (http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-TLD-2-Speed-50L-R-SA-Big-Game-Fishing-Reel-New_W0QQitemZ290261051959QQihZ019QQcategoryZ36162QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262).
This it’s a good choice if I throw on some 50 to 80 lb test? Thanks in advance!

The rod lower medium and the reel is upper poor. You will die from such slow reel when a big fish over 40 lb hooked up.Try anything/brands for rods within 130 to 180 or just say under 200.Reels shoulb be within 150 to 220.Go to local tackle to review their point of view.gd luck.

    i’ve caught many tuna before.
The differnce between tuna and a billfish (marlin, swordfish etc) is tuna have to take the bait and run straight away therefore you have your drag set a little lighter, about 5 kilo. Billfish can actually sit and maul your bait and not run so you must have your drag set heavy, about 10 kilo.
if your going for yellowfin your going to need some tough gear. i would go with a 36kg straight overhead road, pref. a shimano backbone elite and a shimano tiagra reel.
Anything below 80lb line is not going to cut it.
Longfin i would go a tld25 (shimano) and again a shimano backbone elite. About 15kg line and 60 lb trace/leader with a 5/0 livebait hook (if your using livebait.
If u get a big yellowfin send me the pic, they are pure muscle and are the gold medal for many fisho’s.
    Good luck
p.s. The tld 50 is an excellent reel, not upper poor. tiagra of course are better but also cost about double. the 50 will definatly do the job.
